Royal Australian Mint
The Royal Australian Mint is a great free and educational activity for all ages.
The Mint is easy to explore and learn about how all of Australia’s circulating coins are made.
Upstairs you can watch a DVD, see our collection of old and rare Australian coins and observe the factories from our factory viewing area. There are interactive touchscreens available to thoroughly explain the coin making process – the videos take you closer to the action than many of the staff see themselves! There is a lift access to the second floor for prams.
Downstairs you can make a coin, browse the coin shop and the enjoy refreshments at the cafe.
Specific kid-friendly ideas are:
- Go on a free guided tour.
- Complete the Mint Treasure Hunt in the My Visit to the Mint Activity Book Available from the front desk.
- See real robots in action! Wave to Titan, the strongest robot at the Mint, capable of lifting 1,000 kilograms! If Titan isn’t busy helping us make coins he might even dance for you.
- Discover the Holey Dollar and Dump, Australia’s first minted coins – made by a convicted forger, as you wander through the National Coin Collection.
- You can even mint a legal commemorative $1 coin (cost of $3 per coin) and start a collection of your own.
